SIPA's 32nd Annual International
Newsletter & Specialized Information Conference
June 1-3, 2008
The Renaissance Mayflower Hotel
Washington, DC
Monday, June 2, 2008
10:30 – 11:45 AM • Mergers & Acquisitions:
An Overview
It’s been a tough six-to-nine months for the investment-banking
community. Has the M&A party ended? Have we seen the end of
ever-increasing valuations and prices paid for specialized-information
publishers and producers? Battle-scarred bankers Tom O’Connor
of Berkery, Noyes and Scott Peters of Jordan, Edmiston return to
SIPA once again to offer their unique and important perspective
on the state of the M&A marketplace as it relates to our specific
publishing world. If you heard Scott and Tom’s overview last
year, during much rosier times, you’ll certainly want to hear
them again. And if you missed out last year, be sure to arrive early,
because all the seats in front at this session will quickly fill
up. And as an added bonus, Jeff Giesea of
FierceMarkets, who successfully sold his
specialized-information business earlier this
year, will offer some “insider perspective”
about what it’s like to actually go through
the M&A process.

2:15 – 3:15 PM • How to Protect Against Plagiarism and Threats to Your Business Reputation
When author Jonathan Bailey discovered widespread plagiarism of his work on the Web, he decided to tackle it head-on. He quickly developed a methodology that handles most plagiarism cases in less than 15 minutes — and in 3 years, he has shut down more than 300 copy cats. With his 95% success rate, Bailey now consults for clients worldwide. You can visit his Website at www.plagiarismtoday.com.
David R. Yale, Direct Marketer had received one too many spams — coming from his own e-mail address, David@Controlbeaters.Com. His investigation uncovered some alarming facts: the spammer was trying to look like Rodale Press, but all links pointed to a Canadian pharmaceutical Website. The Canadian site was registered to a Chinese business, hosted by an Australian firm, and used
an electronic conferencing system hosted by MIT. Find out what happened — and didn’t — when Yale filed a complaint with The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a partnership between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, set up to route Internet-based criminal complaints to the right law enforcement agency.

3:45 – 5:00 PM • Recruiting & Retention
in the New Publishing Environment
Last year, SIPA Keynoter Lou Adler challenged each of us to dramatically
alter the way we recruit new employees and improve the way in which
we interview candidates before hiring them… describing a better
process - via “performance profiling” - for ensuring
that who you hire can and will do what you really want done. Well,
now it’s payback time. Through the wonders of modern technology,
Lou will be with us again this year, and will be asking us how we’ve
done! ExecuNet VP Lauryn Franzoni, who has interviewed and hired
hundreds of specialized-information professionals over the years,
and now regularly counsels and advises thousands of them electronically,
will join Lou Adler and discuss what some member companies have
experienced in the last year with their recruiting and retention
efforts, and zero in on one specific — and anonymous SIPA
member organization, who’ll report on the joys and agonies
of doing it “…the Adler way!”

10:15 – 11:15 AM • CMS, XML & CYA — What All Specialized Publishers Need to Know and Understand about the “Alphabet Soup” of Content Creation and Distribution in the Web 2.0 World
Back in the “old days,” the most complicated thing about “newsletter publishing” was figuring out how to replace the correcting tape on the Selectric typewriter. (If you have to ask…, forget about it.) Today, specialized publishers think they have to know all about COTS (commercial off-the-shelf software), RSS and XML syndication; SaaS and IaaS; and CMS vs. WCM. Well, where’s the beef …
and where’s the baloney? This panel features two industry experts, who’ll slice through the hype and get you to the heart of the matter. Ed Stevenson of Really Strategies has an enviable track record of helping his clients implement successful content publishing systems and processes, as well as create content-rich online products. And Bill Barnes has been at the forefront of developments in Web-based search and optimization. Together, they’ll take your hands and walk you through all you need to know about the “alphabet soup” of successful content creation and distribution in our Web 2.0 world.
